Five Steps to Assuring Successful Recovery of Data

Mar 10 2010

According to the National Archives & Records Administration in Washington, D.C., 93% of companies that lost their data center for 10 or more days due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year.

Whether your business data is in the form of a customer electronic database, office documents or e-mail content, this statistic illustrates the importance of data in any business. Typically, without data, there is no business.

When this vital data is suddenly not available, the business suffers. Data can become corrupted because of various reasons, including:

* Hardware & system failure

* Human error (accidental deletion & overwrites)

* Software corruption (upgrades & installations)

* Electrical damage (power surges, outages)

* Natural disasters (floods, fires, earthquakes)

* Computer viruses

* Malicious behavior (disgruntled employees)

* Backup tools and techniques are not implemented

The good news is that your data, whether it’s housed on a single hard drive, multi-drive RAID arrays, external hard drives or some other media, is likely not gone forever. But, in order to get your vital data back, you must first take action.

Before you can get your data back, it’s vital that you follow these five data recovery tips:

STEP ONE: Determine the value of the data. Before you try to recover the data from your computer, you should first determine what the value of the data is to your company. If the data is not essential to your operation and has no potential future ramifications then you could attempt to recover the data yourself.

In the real world, however, most data is crucial in day-to-day business. In fact, U.S. businesses lose on average $12 billion per year because of data loss. In an Ontrack report entitled 2001 Cost of Downtime Survey Results, 28% of respondents said that data loss would cost them between $51,000 and $250,000 per hour and 25% said it would cost them more than $251,000 per hour.

You actually need to be evaluating the cost of your data on an hourly basis. Twenty-one percent of respondents in the same Ontrack survey said that their company would be in serious risk if they lost their data for 48 hours. Twenty-four percent said that their business is at risk in less than a day of data loss.

So if you’re experiencing a hard drive crash, server problems or another crisis where data loss could be imminent, ask yourself:

* How will it affect me and my company if I lose this data?

* What will it cost me in dollars and down-time to re-enter this data?

* Can I recreate this data if I need to?

If you conclude your data is essential, stop what you’re doing and turn off the system and follow the remaining steps.

STEP TWO: Don’t listen to anyone but a data recovery specialist. Data recovery is a highly specialized task that only experts should perform. Your corporate IT folks may think they know what they’re doing, but they don’t. Not even the system manufacturers are able tell you the right steps to take to recover your data.

Do not listen to anybody, including the manufacturers that tell you to rebuild the array, re-stripe it or reconfigure it. The difference between a RAID and a single drive is the complexity in the way it writes to these drives. If you do the wrong thing, it completely wipes it out and reduces any chance of recovering data.

STEP THREE: Gather information about what happened. When you realize your hard drive is having a problem, the first thing you must do is turn off your system. If your hard drive is clicking, for example, continued use may damage the platters and make your data unrecoverable.

Next, write down the symptoms, which could include:

* Hard drive clicking

* RAID drives in degraded mode

* RAID controller failure

* Empty containers

* Volume not mounting or recognized a BIOS error

Then make a note of exactly what was happening before you discovered the problem:

* Write down what error messages you received

* What the screen condition is

* How many drives are affected

* The position of the array

* The block and stripe size-both forward and backward.

It’s essential you gather as much information as possible and be honest about what is happening.

The reason this information gathering step is so important is that many employees or IT professionals fear they’ll get reprimanded or lose their jobs if it is discovered that human error caused the server crash. Therefore, they often don’t disclose all of the necessary information.

Since human error accounts for 11% of all data loss, it would save you a lot of valuable time, if the data recovery company who you are working with had all of the information up front. Even information that may be embarrassing or not seem relevant is important to share.

STEP FOUR: Never restore or rebuild the hard drive and use it again as if nothing happened. If your server has failed, you should not attempt to manually rebuild the array. If you do, you’ll overwrite the original structure, stripping and destroying the data that you need to recover.

Many IT professionals think the solution to the problem is to backup data onto the array that is damaged. If the backup array is faulty, the IT professional just restored garbage on top of good data.

Furthermore, if the hard drive becomes inaccessible or fails, many IT professionals will run a fresh installation of the operating systems. But if they’ve reformatted the hard drive, they’ve just eliminated any data that was there.

If you have to install software, do not do it on the same drive from which you’re trying to recover data, because the more you write on a drive the more you run the risk of overwriting the sector your data’s on.

Instead of fixing the problem yourself, turn the PC, server or laptop over to a professional data recovery expert to avoid permanent consequences of data loss on your hard drive.

STEP FIVE: Call an expert! Essentially, most data is recoverable. You can even find professionals who will recovery your data in emergency situations where time is of the essence. The best thing to do is to follow the steps above and call a data recovery specialist. You’ll eliminate the guess work and be assured you’re doing all of the right things to recover your data.

Mar 08 2010

Phreaknic13 Conference Oct 31st 2009. This is a speech on Data Recovery Diagnostics. This is taking a step back from my other talks and trying to explain what happens and when you can fix it or not. This provides descriptions of damaged hard drives and how to know what is wrong with them the best that can be explained in an hour. I talk about Seagate Hard Drives, Western Digital Drives, and IBM Travelstar or Hitachi Drives as well as laptop drives. This is part of what I teach in my classes. if you want to know more about the classes see myharddrivedied website or search for my name and SANS. PS: Sorry about the video quality, its not my fault. This is actually what the conference recorded.

Phonics Bingo

Mar 07 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Phonics is a popular method of teaching children to read that is based around the child learning to connect sounds with letters or groups of letters. For example, the child would learn that the hard “k” sound is associated with the letters “c”, “k” or “ck“. To be fair, using phonics as a method of teaching reading has not been without controversy, particularly in the United States of America, at least since the mid 19th century, and especially since the reemergence of phonics in the 1950s.

Those teachers who do use phonics, generally use them in a variety of different classroom activities, not just when students are reading from books or writing. For example, phonics and phonics-based skills can be incorporated into many different classroom activities and educational games, including, for example, bingo.

Phonics bingo is played like the traditional game of bingo: Each player (student) is given a card containing a five by five grid of squares, and aims to mark of a line of items (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) in response to items called out by the bingo caller (teacher). The different however between phonics bingo and traditional bingo, is that the cards, instead of being printed with numbers, are printed with words appropriate to the subject of the lesson. Additionally, game play may be modified in a variety of different ways.

Some ideas for phonetics bingo include:

1. Partial word bingo – The teacher says something like “find the word with ‘pin’ in it”, in response to which the students would have to find “spin”.

2. Blending bingo – The teacher reads out a word slowly, for example “sss-nnn-aaa-p”, and the students must find the corresponding word.

3. Rhyming bingo – The teacher reads out a word, and students need to find the word that rhymes with it.

4. Silent E bingo – The teacher reads out a word like “pin” and asks what what word you would get by adding an E.

It should also be remembered that phonics is not a complete solution to learning reading. Students must also learn to recognize some common words which can not be sounded out (the most common list of such words is known as Dolch Sight Words). Many teachers also emphasize learning to sight read other common words (such as “is” or “it”) as this can improve reading fluency. Therefore as well as playing phonics bingo, you can also play sight word bingo in class.

Much Ado About Wall Sconces

Mar 05 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Feel the need to de-stress after a long day at the office? Want to create the perfect romantic ambiance for a special evening? Need to add a bright focus to the signature art canvas above the fireplace? Brightening a dark area to repel depression? Wall sconces can do all this for you and more.

Just as color suggests psychology, so does lighting. In fact, there may be no better way to set a mood, convey an unspoken message, point to a venerated treasure, or make a frown turn around than with specialized lighting that wall sconces can provide.

Sconces provide light via the bulb used in the fixture as well as reflected light from the surface on which they are mounted. This means that if the surface behind the fixture is light absorbing, the glow will be much less intense than if the surface is light reflective. Therefore, reflected light may swath the area in brightness or blend the light into a softened hue as a backdrop.

While browsing online, sconces advertised were nearly 20 categories, from traditional to art deco; in 10 different finishes, from gold-tone to wrought iron; and four types, from swing arm to down arm. While that may seem like an incredible variety of wall sconces, you can be sure to find several that will inspire your sense of style.

When a savvy homeowner determines that a sconce will do the trick, the first thing to do is inventory the existing space. Take into account the visible light available from windows in the room, filtered from other rooms, and from table or ceiling fixtures. Also consider the perception of light you wish to create.

Once you have a plan, measure the areas where the wall sconces are to be installed. With measurements in hand, dismiss any fixtures that do not match the size of the area you will be lighting. Keep in mind the scale of the room and the existing décor. The height of your ceiling may need to be taken into account.

What are the factors of the lighting task? What is the mood or purpose you wish to express? Consider the aesthetic you wish to create. A handheld flashlight pointed down, up, or sideways will give you an impression of a sconce that may help you decide on the proper fixture.

Make sure that area where it is to be housed is suitable for the installation. Most wall sconces install in a similar fashion and are appropriate for a do-it-yourself. However, if wiring needs to be upgraded or new wiring installed prior to installing the sconce, it is a good idea to hire a professional and to provide him or her with the sconce package directions and specifications. Too, a professional may need to assist if the sconce requires a special switch or dimmer.

What type of bulb does it use? New technologies in lighting call for new types of bulbs. Additionally, you may choose to put the fixtures on a module timed to automatically turn on or off.

Decorative sconces serve as a disappointment if not properly installed, or if it does not function as you had planned. Plan well and your new wall sconces will add joy and inviting warmth to your room.

Motion Templates for Automatic Classification and Retrieval of Motion Capture Data (SCA 2006)

Mar 02 2010

Meinard Müller and Tido Röder. This paper presents new methods for automatic classification and retrieval of motion capture data facilitating the identification of logically related motions scattered in some database. As the main ingredient, we introduce the concept of motion templates (mts), by which the essence of an entire class of logically related motions can be captured in an explicit and semantically interpretable matrix representation. The key property of mts is that the variable aspects of a motion class can be automatically masked out in the comparison with unknown motion data. This facilitates robust and efficient motion retrieval even in the presence of large spatio-temporal variations. Furthermore, we describe how to learn an MT for a specific motion class from a given set of training motions. %In applying mts to motion annotation and retrieval, our key idea is to %automatically mask out the variable aspects of a motion class, which can be %thought of as locally adaptive feature selection. In our extensive experiments, which are based on several hours of motion data, mts proved to be a powerful concept for motion annotation and retrieval, yielding accurate results even for highly variable motion classes such as cartwheels, lying down, or throwing motions.
